For many of us in Australia, holidays mean CAMPING: packing up the essentials, driving to a semi-secluded area and connecting with nature. Camping is a way to take time for yourself, connect with others around a campfire, and forget about the stresses of the daily grind (at least for a little while).
Recreational camping as we know it came with the dawn of the 20th Century – but encampments have existed for military campaigns for thousands of years.
When walking around the Abbey Medieval Festival you can see encampments of the Middle Ages which don’t seem too far removed from the modern camping experience – beautiful tents, cozy rugs, handcrafted clay pottery, and cast iron pots and kettles perched atop communal fire pits.
The ‘Camping Through the Ages 1420’ raffle prizes wouldn’t be out of place in a medieval encampment. The grand prize consisted of a 5m high and 6m wide hand painted medieval style tent from Red Hart Reproductions and a portable camping stove set complete with tripod, kettle saw, cauldron, and cooking pan from Make Your Own Medieval. Runner-up through 5th place prizes included handmade wooden bowl and trencher set, limited series ‘Abbey Made’ products, Abbey 2020 Mead and more! This raffle was valued at over $3,100!
‘Camping Through the Ages 2020’ raffle was a modern camping setup – with a medieval twist. The grand prize consisted of a 4m canvas bell tent from Psyclone Tents, a flat pack steel fire pit from Stahl Fire Pits, and an incredible hand forged kitchen knife set from Red Hart Reproductions. Runner-up through 5th place prizes included handmade pottery, limited series ‘Abbey Made’ products, Abbey 2020 Mead and more! This raffle was valued at over $2,650!
