Acknowledgement to Kabi Kabi Country

We honour the ancient cultural history of the land on which the Abbey Museum is situated and the custodianship of Kabi Kabi people in caring for country over thousands of years.

The sculpture represents Kabi Kabi shields and two timbers used to make them on country: Batwing Coral Tree and Moreton Bay Fig. The Bungwall Fern shown on the shields is still growing in this area. Its roots were ground by women to make damper. The coloured inserts reference the stained glass in the Abbey Museum collection.

This artwork is a collaboration between the traditional custodian and artist, Lyndon Davis; the public artist and fabricator, Russell Anderson; and the curator, John Waldron.

This project was supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland including through the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF). The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Moreton Bay City Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

The sculpture was further supported by Abbey Museum Friends, Creative Australia Plus 1, Baillie Family Foundation (Hayley & James Baillie) and Blue Sky View.
