Friends Presentation – ‘The Medieval Supernatural’ by Chris White, Jenny Davis Barnett and Dr Beth Spacey

April 20 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Join three UQ researchers as they explore three aspects of the medieval supernatural, discussing what medieval Europeans believed, and how and why they wrote about these phenomena.

  • Dr. Beth Spacey, Lecturer in Medieval History, will present a selection of mysterious signs supposedly witnessed by medieval crusaders and discuss how these were interpreted by observers and commentators.
  • Chris White, PhD candidate, will be telling medieval ghost stories, and speaking about how churchmen used the returning dead to discuss Church reform between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries.
  • Jenny Davis Barnett, PhD candidate, will explore medieval European ideas about witches and trace the origins of some common witch motifs, like the idea that witches fly on broomsticks.

Why not come a little earlier and visit the Museum to see the collections of coins, sculpture, glass, stained glass, ceramics, carvings, lacquerware, prehistoric stone and bone tools, illuminated manuscripts and rare books.

A light afternoon tea will follow the talk.
