Medieval – Knights Program Overview

This program is particularly suitable for the Grade 8 Depth Study: Medieval Europe (c.590 – c.1500) in version 8.4 of the Australian National History Curriculum.

Program Highlights:

• Knights Presentation:
• Students will explore the concept of continuity and change by examining replica medieval arms and armor, spanning from the Viking era to the early Renaissance. (ACDSEH051 – Continuity and Change in Military Systems)
• Key concepts concerning the use and limitations of historical sources for these periods will be introduced, helping students understand the challenges of interpreting historical evidence.
• Students will also have the opportunity to handle and wear the equipment under the supervision of presenters and teaching staff.
• Museum Visit:
• Students will tour our extensive collection of medieval artifacts, learning about medieval social structure and the role of knights within it. (ACDSEH008 – Medieval Social Structure and the Role of Knights)
• Worksheets tailored to expand students’ understanding of medieval social life are available to schools.
• Church Tour:
• In a visit to the neighboring Abbey Church, students will experience the historical beauty of stained glass. A presentation will cover the role of the church in medieval society, the function and significance of stained glass, and include a demonstration of a knighting ceremony. • Archery:
• Students will participate in our popular archery component, learning traditional shooting methods and practicing with blunt arrows for safety. This activity emphasizes the skills and techniques valued in medieval defense.
