Public Art on Country: Collaboration, Place and Cultural Legacy

Public art has the power to honour stories, shape place, and create enduring cultural legacies. This half-day seminar brings together artists and curators to explore how meaningful collaboration and site-responsive practice can result in meaningful and powerful public artworks.

Framed by the new sculpture Acknowledgement to Kabi Kabi Country by Lyndon Davis and Russell Anderson, the program includes keynote talks by Dr John Waldron and Lubi Thomas, alongside an artist panel discussion involving Lyndon Davis, Simone Eisler, Russell Anderson, and Lubi Thomas.

This event is ideal for artists, curators, commissioners, fabricators and anyone interested in the future of public art in Queensland and beyond.

ORDER OF EVENTS

9:00am – Enjoy a light morning tea at the Abbey Cafe with scones* and complimentary tea and coffee (included with your ticket).

9:30am – The Welcome to Country will be performed by Lyndon Davis in front of the Acknowledgement to Kabi Kabi Country sculpture outside the Abbey Museum.

10:05am – Keynote speeches:

1. Dr John Waldron – Curating for Country and Place: Public Art, Collaboration and Cultural Legacy
2. Lubi Thomas – In and Of Place: Making Meaning Through Public Art

10:45am – Panel discussion moderated by Dr John Waldron with special guests Lyndon Davis, Russell Anderson, Lubi Thomas, and Simone Eisler

11:45am – Q&A session with Dr John Waldron and panel guests

12:00pm – Lunch (optional). The Abbey Cafe will be open for lunch at the conclusion of the Q&A session. As the Cafe will also be open to the general public and Museum visitors, please pre-order your lunch by 4 September so our staff can ensure everyone is served in a timely manner. A link to the lunch pre-order form will be sent via email upon purchase of your tickets. Barista coffee and a selection of cold drinks will be available for purchase from the Abbey Cafe on the day.

The registration fee includes FREE entry to the Abbey Museum and, after the seminar, a visit to the exhibition Inspired Images: The Art of Faiths in the new Art Gallery with the Senior Curator, Michael Strong, in residence.

The Aknowledgement to Kabi Kabi is a collaboration between the traditional custodian and artist, Lyndon Davis, the public artist and fabricator, Russell Anderson and curator, John Waldron.
